iPhone Edition of Flash of Genius: SAT* Vocab

What's so great about Flash of Genius?

That's simple.

Other vocabulary programs treat each word as totally unrelated to each other word. But we understand that you learn and retain words best when you make connections from those you already know to the ones you're struggling with.

For example, you may know that a eulogy is a speech given at a funeral. But do you know what euphony is? Do you know what a neologism is?

The word eulogy comes from the root eu, meaning "good", and the root log, meaning "word or speech". A eulogy is a speech where you say nice things about the deceased. ("He was such a nice man, so generous...")

Knowing that, it's easy to learn—and not forget—what euphony means. It means something that sounds good or pleasant, especially in a speech. ("Obama's talent for speech-giving comes partly from his talent for euphony. He knows how to string words together in a way that sounds wonderful.") It comes from the word roots eu ("good") and phon ("sound").

The word eulogy is also related to the word neologism, which means a newly-invented word or phrase. ("The words 'googling' and 'cybersex' are two of the many neologisms sprouted during the internet age.") They both come from the root log, meaning "word or speech".

Sometimes the root is spelled "log" but sometimes it's spelled "loq" or "loc". Look how many words, all having to do with words or speech, come from these roots:

  • colloquial
  • eloquent
  • epilogue
  • eulogy
  • grandiloquent
  • interlocutor
  • locution
  • loquacious
  • neologism
  • philology
  • prologue
  • soliloquy

Flash of Genius shows you flashcards in an order that is designed to help you learn the words in groups, to emphasize the roots.

Best of all, Flash of Genius will make special lesson cards tailored to you, to help you see the connections. So if you get a word like eulogy right but later get the word euphony wrong, Flash of Genius will interject a lesson flashcard to make sure you don't miss the connection between the word you already know and the word you're struggling with.

Other flashcard programs treat words as totally separate concepts, but Flash of Genius shows you the connections to help you learn faster and then never forget. That's the Flash of Genius difference.
